The fluid passing through these bypasses does not participate adequately in heat transfer. Coolers, on the other hand, do not have bypasses, and the corrugations of the plates allow the flow to be turbulent at low flow rates. Therefore, the cooler has a higher heat transfer coefficient, usually 3 to 5 times that of the shell and tube cooler.
